Some selected patients benefit from Arthroscopic Meniscal surgery. For example, with acute meniscal tears, meniscal repair can be appropriate. Degenerative meniscal tears (wear-and-tear) can benefit from arthroscopic surgery if mechanical symptoms prevail or patients fail to improve after a course of physiotherapy.
Whether symptoms can be effectively managed depends on the overall wear-and-tear state of the knee. If pre-operative weight bearing knee x-rays show evidence of osteoarthritis, knee arthroscopy and so-called “scraping and clean out” may not be of any benefit. Dr Boerger will advise his patients ethically if such surgery is likely to improve knee pain.
